Want To Boost Book Club? Bring In The Author!

There are innumerable benefits to bringing in an author to boost your book club. For regular book-lovers, the exposure and intimacy to the author of a book is far more enriching than simply reading the book. If you’re a writer in a book club, you get to reap that many more benefits as you also enjoy the personal contact and dose of inspiration and motivation for your own work. For authors, the benefits are also huge in terms of book sales, nurturing a relationship with your readers, and enjoying a long future of increased engagement and sharing of your titles. Read on to see how everyone gains so much from a single author visit to book club!

Normal book club meetings are great—especially if your club is serious about its snacks—but to have next level book clubbery that boosts a normal conversation into one you’ll never forget, bring in the author of the book you’ll be reading to join you!

Many authors—both those published by larger houses and those who independently or self-publish—delight in chatting with their readers in the intimate setting of a book club and even make visiting book clubs part of their regular practice.

We also curate a seasonal “One Lit Place Book Club Recommended Reads Featured Author List” that showcases authors across the genres who are happy to visit book clubs.

The Literature Lovers in Book Club Get a Front Row Seat

For book club members who already clearly love to read, bringing in the author is rewarding on numerous levels. The author’s insights may provoke questions you hadn’t thought of while reading or inspire a whole other stimulating conversation.

It’s also neat to hear the behind-the-scenes info from the author: what they experienced with the inception, the writing, and the publishing process. (There may even be some gossip or hidden details you’d have never learned otherwise!). And what a lovely way to respect the art and craft of a book than to share your views, questions, and even concerns with the author.

An Author Visit to Book Club Is Even Better When You're Also a Writer

Atop all of this, if you’re in a book club and happen to be a writer yourself, whether you’re on the cusp of starting a writing practice, an emerging writer, or a published author, it is always wonderful to get to see fellow writers in the flesh, as normal folks. It’s a great way to either recognize that they are you but only a slim step ahead in the game- a step you could yourself take that very evening once you get home- or to enjoy a collegial and affirming sense that you are on the same right path with your own work.
Plus, spending time chatting with a fellow writer is always motivating: after all, published authors are but people, yet somehow they find a way to carve out the time to write, go head-to-head with their fears and insecurities, stay strong and diligent, and allow their artistry to lead the way. If you ever falter with your own work or feel lumps along the road that give you pause, bringing in an author to visit your book club can be a lovely way to add some oomph to your own motivation and gusto.

The Benefit Goes Both Ways: How Book Authors Benefit from Visiting Book Clubs

Authors Benefit from Community Connections when Visiting Book Clubs

For a book author, you can reap huge benefit from visiting book clubs.

Spending an hour with people who have closely read your book is one of the coolest ways to know your work has resonated with its readership. These people haven’t just read your book; they’ve read it mindfully, thoroughly, and with inquiry precisely because they know they’re going to be talking about it. Getting to chat with them about the years of work you put into the book is a thrill.

[This incredible article reinforces how valuable visiting book clubs is for authors, how to find book clubs to visit, and how to nurture those new relationships] ~

I loved being invited to their "meeting," answering their questions, and hearing their observations about the book. [...] Everyone was engaged as we discussed why I wrote the book and where I got my inspiration. I found most people had read it as well. Ahead of each book club, I noticed new sales of my book on Amazon, so I can confidently say book clubs help sell books!

The conversation may range from how the book came into being, how you turned your ideas into story, how you used your real-life friends and family and situations or your imagination (or both), and what your process for writing is. Sharing your trials, such as realizing at page 160 you were on the wrong track and having to throw all that work away, your successes, and everything in-between establishes a wonderful connection with the book club members, humanizes you as the face behind the words, and forever will establish you as the interesting and lovely author they got to spend a private evening with.

Visiting Book Club Is a Fantastic Marketing Tool for Authors

Also, to look at it from a marketing perspective, a single visit to a book club is gold. By agreeing to join the group, you will:

  • sell anywhere from 5-12 copies of your book in one shot
  • establish personal connections with the participants
  • give them some swag or custom material to pass along to their friends
  • either walk away with photos if you visit in-person to use on your website and social media or some virtual pics plus the promise of 5-star reviews of your book on Amazon and Goodreads.

From one visit, you can also look forward to long-reaching rewards. Once you connect with the book club participants, you and your book will forever occupy a front row spot in their personal library both literally and figuratively. Their connection to you becomes a kind of currency, making them far more likely to want to keep connecting with you on social media, leave your book (and future books) positive reviews, and share your book or social posts with others. After all, it’s a special thing to get to chat so intimately with the author of a book!

Given the competition for eyeballs on your work, putting yourself into the running of being invited—and doing it with grace and enthusiasm—sets you up for great success with your readership, one club at a time.

While the ultimate goal is book sales, I loved connecting with strangers and hearing how my stories resonated with them and how they made them feel. Plus, everyone wanted to know when my next book would be released.
