Do you often feel isolated and unsure having to confront a high-stakes academic writing project on your own? Are you looking for some structure and accountability to help you get your work done? Perhaps you believe it would help to hear how other graduate students handle the demands on their time?

Our weekly Academic Virtual Writing Sessions + are the ideal solution for graduate students craving motivation, accountability, commitment, and purpose.

Small group sessions are a sure way to generate new work, revise an existing manuscript, or journal to stay on track with your academic writing in a safe, productive online environment.

How Our Academic Writing Sessions + Work

Our online Writing Sessions + are mentor-led 75-minute sessions of quiet writing time along with informal, collaborative discussion among the participants and mentor to share ideas, frustrations, tips, and progress reports.

The sessions take place weekly, on a subscription basis, to small groups of academic writers.

Each session starts with a brief greeting after which you are invited to share what you will be working on that day along with any short- or long-term goal you have set for yourself. We then do a timed 30-minute writing session; have a five-minute break; do another 20 minutes of writing; and conclude with comments from writers, Q & A, and/or a brief reading to spark ideas and spur energy to keep us going through the week.

Our Academic Virtual Writing Sessions + support writers with:

  • Structured, protected writing time
  • Relaxed, self-monitored accountability
  • Community
  • Informal peer support

FAQs

How are weekly writing sessions useful?

Carving out the time to write is difficult for a grad student tasked with researching, teaching, attending classes, and doing assignments plus writing a dissertation. Knowing you have a scheduled date and time to write each week anchors your writing and holds you accountable to your goals. Being able to sit and chat with peers is also affirming: you’re all in this together. There’s power in such a community.

Who can take part in the sessions?

All students in a graduate program (Master’s or PhD) are welcome.

How are the sessions laid out (semestered or ongoing)?

The Fall sessions will start in the third week of September and run weekly through the third week of December for a total of 14 weeks. The sessions will start again in January after the holidays and run until June (TBD) with a break in March for spring holidays.

How does the subscription work?

Upon enrollment, you will be charged the first week’s session fee. Regular weekly charges will begin the morning of the second week’s session and continue until the sessions end for the academic year in June 2026. The weekly fee will be paused during winter holiday (December 19- January TBD) and spring holiday (TBD) breaks.

What if I can’t make a week? Can I get a refund?

The accountability group is a non-refundable experience. If you know you will not be able to make an upcoming session, let us know by 5:00 p.m. EST Tuesday prior to your session, and we can pause your payment for that week. You can also cancel your subscription and resubscribe. Cancellations can be made either on the One Lit Place website or in writing to contact@onelitplace.com.

If the mentor is unavailable for a week’s session, a replacement mentor will be provided, or you will be issued a credit, which you may put toward another unpaid week’s session or a different program or service at One Lit Place.

How is this group different from a workshop?

This group is to provide a safe, productive community where graduate students enjoy holding themselves accountable and making measured progress on manuscripts. The writing you do in the sessions is for your own eyes only and will not be critiqued or shared.
