Complete & Essential Novel Program FAQs

How do I make sure I get all your emails?

We take every step available to ensure our emails arrive to your inbox; however, spam filters constantly update and it may be you find our emails in your junk/spam/promotions filter.

Please make sure you physically drag any email that arrives to your junk/spam/promotions folder into your inbox- this trains your email system to know our emails are not junk. Also please add contact@onelitplace.com to your contacts or safe senders list.

These two steps on your side will ensure you’re receiving everything from us!

May I choose my mentor?

All of our mentors are writing coaches & editors from the One Lit Place Writers & Creative Team. Each is a published author, holds either an M.A., MFA and/or PhD in writing and literature, has worked many years as a writing coach and editor, and consistently provides valuable, compassionate, and educated service to our creative, academic, and business clients of all writing levels and genres.

You will be matched with a mentor on our team who is available to begin the program when you are; however, if you would like to request one of our team specifically before you are assigned a mentor, we will do our best to accommodate you!

When do I meet my mentor?

By the middle of the second week, you will receive an invitation email to your Private Team in our Editors’ Platform where you will meet with your mentor. Please wait for this email to register for the platform.

How do my meetings with my mentor work?

Once you’re registered in your Private Team in the Editors Platform, you will see a greeting from your mentor and a scheduling link. Please use the link to schedule your first- and all subsequent meetings- with your mentor. You may meet over video conference, phone, or life chat (by request) if you prefer. The platform will alert you every time your mentor posts a comment, link or document in the team, so you always know when there’s conversation afoot.

The meetings: You’re allocated either 30 min./week (Complete program) or 30 minutes every other week (Essential program) to brainstorm, talk through aspects of your work or process, get advice or strategies, or share pages for insight and suggestions. Your mentor is there for you as emotional and intellectual support as well as to provide literary insights on craft, writing practice, and your process. The only thing your mentor won’t do is read your work and offer feedback on it because that can hamper your creative process in the first draft.

Between meetings, you’re welcome to ask a quick question or for advice- better you are informed and feeling confident than frustrated, so please reach out if you need to!

Can I borrow time from one meeting and apply it to the next?

All program meetings are booked for 30 minutes. If you find you’d like a longer meeting here and there or generally, you’re welcome to purchase as many individual extra hours with your mentor as you’d like, and those additional hours can be allocated as you like, whether by adding more time to your regular meetings or used as additional meeting times.

What if I miss a meeting or realize in advance I won’t be able to keep my scheduled meeting?

If you give your mentor ample notice (we request 24 hours) that you will be unable to keep your scheduled meeting, you will be allowed to reschedule it. If you fail to show up to your meeting without notice, it will not be recoverable. All meetings are scheduled directly with the mentor.

In my first few days of the program, I clicked on the “Editors Platform,” but it opened a new account for me that’s not associated with One Lit Place. What happened?

To access your private team with your editor in our Editors’ Platform, you must do so through your invitation email, which will arrive to you by the middle of Week 2. If you create an account in the app on your own, you will have an account that is not hosted by or associated with One Lit Place.

Please do not access the Editors Platform until you have received your invitation email and created your account with us. After that time, you’re welcome to access the platform any time!

Something has come up, and I won’t be able to complete the program on the 4-month timeline. What are my options?

Lengthen the program: If you find you will be unable to maintain the pace of the daily writing (3 pages/day) and need to reduce your page number to 2 or even 1 page/day, you will still successfully write your novel draft, but over a longer period of time.

You will continue to have access to your lessons and can discuss with your mentor how to either stretch out your meetings to accommodate for the longer program length or you may wish to add an hour or two to bridge the longer period so you continue to have support throughout.

Throughout your program, regardless of its length, you will continue to have access to your lessons, and you can discuss with your mentor how to use your allocated hours (either 8 hours for the Complete Program or 4 hours for the Essential Program).

If you will be elongating your program, you may wish to purchase an additional hour or two to ensure you’re supported throughout the length of your program (details below).

Pause the program: If you find you cannot write at all for a period of time, please let us know and we will pause your emails that alert you to the latest lesson, and you can tell your mentor to pause your lessons. When you’re ready to begin again, just let us know and we can start things back up for you!

Cancel the program: If you find you must cancel the program, you have 7 days of Free Trial period during which you may cancel and not be charged. You may also cancel between 7-14 days and will not be required to pay your 3 additional monthly payments (or you will be refunded 75% if you paid in full). Please see our Terms and Conditions and Terms of Service for details.

How do I buy additional hours with a mentor?

You may buy as many individual hours as you like during or following your program.

Who are the mentors?

All of our mentors are writing coaches & editors from the One Lit Place Writers & Creative Team. Each is a published author, holds either an M.A., MFA and/or PhD in writing and literature, has worked many years as a writing coach and editor, and consistently provides valuable, compassionate, and educated service to our creative, academic, and business clients of all writing levels and genres.

What if I don’t feel like I need my weekly or bi-weekly meeting with my mentor?

Continuous regular contact with your mentor is what sets this program apart from others. A few meetings here and there is too casual to establish a relationship and give you the feeling that someone out there is partnered with you and working alongside you to ensure your success.

Our weekly or bi-weekly meetings and opportunity to reach out in between affords you the opportunity to develop a relationship with your mentor who can come to know your book, your process, and you personally. This intimacy ensures you get the exact support you need in ways that are most relevant. It’s like having a direct hotline to your own seasoned literary professional!

Further, once you have your completed draft, you’ll automatically have a trusted editorial partner and guide who knows you and your work and is most effectively able to easily step in and get to work with you.

Naturally, if you cannot make one of your meetings or wish to reschedule, as long as you give your mentor ample notice (min. 24 hours), you are welcome to reschedule or double it up with another meeting (see Terms and Conditions).

If you find you do not need your weekly or bi-weekly meeting, you can organize a different schedule with your mentor. You are entitled to your allotment of hours, so if you wish to use them differently than the program has in its design, you may certainly do that.

How does the payment plan work?

The payment plan charges your credit card in 4 separate installments, one per month. You begin the program with the first installment (the first month’s payment or 25% of the total program cost).

How can I change my Member Area password?

Log in, and go to My Profile (available in the Member Area Main Page).

How do I get a refund if the program isn’t for me?

Your satisfaction is very important to us! We offer a 7-day Free Trial precisely so you can see how the program works in action and can determine whether it’s right for you. If you need or wish to cancel for any reason after the free trial, please cancel your subsequent payments with Paypal (instructions are on your Write Your Novel in 4 Months Home Page). Your first monthly payment is not refunded. Please also let us know you’re cancelling, so we can continue to support you in whatever way you need. Please email us at contact@onelitplace.com (see Terms and Conditions & Terms of Service).

What are the next steps after the program is over?

Once you have your full first draft, you may wish to bring in a writing coach & editor who can provide you with developmental feedback (your first round of constructive comments on all aspects of the draft) or get right down to business with substantive editing to help you prepare the manuscript for publication.

Your same 15% discount will apply, which you can use for one full year from your enrollment date. Contact us to get set up with a mentor as soon as you’d like to get your book ready for prime time!

How do I contact you if I have a question?
